Mathews Beach Residence

This modest 2-bedroom house in North Seattle was starting to show it's age. With direct marching orders from the client to create an inviting and comfortable craftsman-inspired home the driving force for the program became finding the ideal location for the stair. The new stair location had to balance between minimizing impact to the existing structure and maximizing circulation efficiencies to best accommodate the existing basement and main floor as well as the new upper floor. The main floor became dedicated to the public realm including the living, kitchen, dining and family room. The new upstairs established a private sanctuary with 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms including the master suite. The master suite is located to best capture the territorial view of the Cascades to the East. The lower level was left intact except the structural upgrades and relocated stair.
